The Amphitheatre north of the Pergola became known as the Sports Area.
Intended for Tennis, Croquet, bowls etc, including cycling, according to G.A Gibbs memorial plan. Clubs were invited to make use of the area that would then be independantly developed with separate grants from the Welfare Dept' The Committee was amazed that there were no applications. By opening day the area was still being grazed by sheep.
In 1956 the Maintenance Committee considered installing a Roller Skating rink. However the wide open space has often since been used for family gatherings and various functions. There is still room for such and light sports, with the addition of a Shared Heritage Entry Archway and Shared path along the Mangaohoi Stream, which itself was a traditional means of travel.
